How to Find Comet Lulin

Tuesday May 12, 2009

Comet Lulin will be closest to Earth on the night of February 23 into the 24. During that week, it will be near some bright, familiar objects and should be relatively easy to find. Grab a pair of binoculars, a camera or a telescope and see if you can have a look at it!

Thanks, though this …
Thanks, though this guide only works for this particular comet. Every new one will take a different path through the sky, unless it used to be one comet that broke up into pieces.

It’s still visible, …
It’s still visible, but you definitely need binoculars at this point. Google “Astronomy Picture of the Day” and look for the one for February 25. There are some charts linked at the bottom that go beyond the dates I list here.

Holmes was a great …
Holmes was a great surprise. I was even able to see it from my apartment in Los Angeles. Lulin is no longer visible to the naked eye, but it will still show up in binoculars. Check out the Astronomy Picture of the Day for February 25 for charts that extend beyond what I have here.

Man, I wish I heard about this sooner! How much longer will it be visible? I remember comet Holmes and Hale-Bopp, those were so sweet! I stumbled across Holmes by accident having no previous knowledge of it; what a surprise that was!

What you saw was …
What you saw was debris falling into Earth’s atmosphere and burning up. Unless we know of a satellite that’s lost its orbit, we can’t predict when these things will show up. Three bright meteors in one night is a pretty good show in itself. The comet is much fainter, and would require knowing where to look beforehand. Let me know if you try again.

Hugh,
The comet …

Hugh,
The comet isn’t very bright, but tonight it should be very near the brightest star in Leo (Regulus). It will appear as a fuzzy patch, maybe with a brighter concentrated center and greenish in tint. Good luck! This is probably the only time it will visit us, ever.

I am in the U.K., i went out last night with Binoculars, not knowing were exactly to look, i scanned the sky looking for something bright and unusual, the only thing i could see was the brightest start in the sky, as Lulin appears every 1000 years, i hope to be able to look to the sky this evening , and look for Leo, and follow your instructions.
Regards
Hugh

It’s likely this is the only time this particular comet comes through. Leo will be up all night, and closest to overhead around midnight.

yay! Did you know …
yay! Did you know it wont be visible for the next thousand years? Thats why I’m desperate to see it! So Thursday 26th is the best. When will star sign Leo be passing over Yorkshire? I calculated about 2am but might not be sure.

Was there evidence of a tail? What I’ve seen through a 4″ scope has mainly been the coma and nucleus.

Yes, and I got some more pictures on Monday night when it was near Saturn in the sky. I’ll have to process those and make them available.

I looked at it with my 5 inch. It was a green smudge. Even just for that, it was surprising detail for a 5 inch, and it was awesome.

Yes, and it should be about as bright as it is now for a few more days. The moon will get brighter in the sky, though, making it harder to see the comet.
